The red cardinal ( Cardinalis cardinalis) is the state bird for seven states, Illinois , Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia. It winters as far North as  Berea, Ohio, the site of this photograph. This male has a vibrant red color and stout beak for crunching sunflower seeds at your feeder, a favorite food.
